SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas based nonprofit organization Give More HUGS (GMH), is dedicated to providing children with books and school supplies to ensure they are successful in school today and for their future. The nonprofit empowers students, teachers and schools to share a love for reading through their BookShare project. Adams Elementary School has received hundreds of books for students often times do not have access to books at home. Tiffany Baltierra, Student Ambassador and a college student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has volunteered with Give More HUGS for over two years to ensure children have access to books and supplies.
“I have witnessed the importance of giving back through my efforts as a student ambassador. It’s truly an impactful approach to preparing leaders who go out into the community to help provide books and supplies to children,” Baltierra said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to support Adams Elementary School.”
All students at Adams Elementary will receive a brand new book to start of 2020 with books at home. The unique part of the BookShare project is that students from third, fourth and fifth grades will sign each book with an inspirational message to encourage younger readers to grow their love for reading.
“Partnering and providing books to every child helps to continue fostering the importance of literacy and making connections at home and school,” said Vanessa Fox-Norton, principal of Adams Elementary School. “We are excited about this learning experience for Adams Elementary School students. They will have an opportunity to interact with each other, meeting social and emotional needs.”
Upper grades will go into each kindergarten, first grade and second grade classrooms to read with each student and surprise them at the end with their own brand new books. Students will read starting at 8 a.m. Jan.14-16. You are welcome to use my name for reference. We invite media to share this story of our community coming together to share the love for reading to ensure all children can read. On Jan. 16, the Parent Teacher Association, Give More HUGS and members of their school community will share the importance of literacy and encourage parents to read their children’s brand new books with them.
“The mission of our Adams PTA program is geared at informing parents on educational topics related to our school, help foster partnerships between the parents and school staff, and more importantly to help parents get engaged in their child’s education. Our PTA board believes that the only proven way to increase academic success is by getting parents involved in their child’s learning. Our focused goal this year is to encourage parents to read to their child and to make reading together a daily part of their lives as a family,” said James Cuellar, PTA President of Adams Elementary. “We believe that the family that reads together, learns together. We are blessed to have the opportunity to partner with the Give More Hugs organization that is supporting our effort to help encourage our parents/students to foster that love for reading through the BookShare Project peer reading learning experience.”
The nonprofit Give More HUGS mentors and trains students and teachers to implement projects like the BookShare to give students access to books and resources in underserved communities.
